Guest Book Alternatives

You are planning Mom and Dad's 50th anniversary party, a wedding or a special birthday party and you want to remember who attended but the typical guest book seems boring and outdated. When the party is over it will remain in the bottom of a drawer somewhere to be looked at perhaps once every 10 years. What to do? Today, with advances in technology and lifestyles, numerous alternatives to the old fashioned guest book are available. The following are just a few ideas.

Photo book - It is easy and relatively inexpensive to create a photo book either on-line or through a photo processing center, such as Costco. Planning an anniversary party? Create a book containing photos of the couple through the years beginning with their wedding photo. Planning a wedding? Create a book containing photos of the couple during their relationship. Leave enough white space around the photos for guests to sign.

Cook book - If the guest of honor enjoys cooking, choose a special cookbook, perhaps desserts, salads or grilling. Allow guests to choose a recipe and sign their name near it. The drawback is that guests will hold up the line while they peruse the book to find just the right recipe (or recipes) to sign.

Photo mat - Choose a light colored mat about 3 inches wide and big enough to hold an 8x10 or larger photo. Provide several pens in a coordinating color that will easily write on the mat material (the fiber absorbs ink, so several pens are needed). After the event, add a photo of the bride and groom or the guest of honor, frame the mat and create a visible reminder of the wedding or party. (Be sure to remind guests not to sign near the outer edge of the mat. If they do, a portion of their note will be covered by the frame.)

Address book - Choose an attractive address book and ask guests to provide their information. Sending thank you notes after the party will be a breeze.

Quilt blocks - If the guest of honor or a family member or friend enjoys quilting, provide fabric squares and colored fabric pens for guests to design a quilt block.

Ceramic plate or platter - Purchase a ceramic plate or platter at a do-it-yourself ceramics studio. Ask the studio owner for the proper pens for signing. After the event, have the plate glazed and fired.  It can then either be displayed or used for meals.

Why have a boring, old fashioned guest book when, with a bit of thought, you can create something that will be used and enjoyed for years to come.
