Did You Spend Too Much on Your Event? Drowning in Debt? Help is Available

Your event is over. You had a wonderful time; your guests loved the food, decor and music. Now the credit card bills are arriving and you realize you spent way beyond your budget. What to do? Unfortunately, you may need to tighten your belt and eat beans for the next few months until the bills are paid. But you can prevent this from happening in the future.

If the idea of making a budget and managing your finances makes your eyes glaze over, you are not alone. Financial literacy is one of those topics that scares many people. But help is available. The "Treasure Valley Bank On" program is one option. Taught by professionals from area banks, the classes cover such topics as saving, tracking expenses and budgeting. The free classes are taught at various locations around the Treasure Valley. For information, see unitedwaytv.org/work/bank-on. The program is sponsored by United Way of the Treasure Valley.

Financial Peace University, http://www.daveramsey.com/fpu/home/?snid=classes.fpu-a, is another option for those interested in a more in-depth program. Classes are taught at local churches and businesses and on-line, or you can purchase the DVD set and learn at home at your leisure. The course was designed by Dave Ramsey, an internationally recognized expert in personal financial management.

Though you can't change the past, you can change your financial future with a bit of time and dedication.
