New Trend: Naked Bride? Nope - Naked Cake
When you think of naked, do you think of cake? Not usually, but some bakers do. A naked cake is one devoid of icing so the filling/fillings show through. Christina Tosi, chef and owner of Milk Bar, a bakery with locations in New York and Toronto, is
credited with starting the trend. The idea is to let the elements of the cake shine through rather than covering them with a layer of icing.
Decor most often consists of natural elements, including fruit, berries and flowers. The cake below, right, contains alternating layers of white and chocolate cake decorated with fruit. The cakes generally cost a bit less than a traditional tiered cake because of lower labor and ingredient costs.
Whether a naked cake is right for you depends on your style. If you like rustic, maybe. If you like a romantic vintage look or a more sophisticated look, then no. Personally, I like something more aesthetically pleasing, but to each their own.
