Personalize Your Special Event to Reflect Your Style
Too often when planning a special event, we think back to what friends or business associates have done and we repeat the same thing - same type of venue, same menu, same activities. We may be afraid to think creatively for fear that business associates, family or friends will raise an eyebrow, or worse yet, question our judgement. But why be predictable and boring? Why not do something different - it doesn't have to be a radical change. Don't be afraid to experiment and think creatively. You can express your personality and tastes at your special event in a variety of ways to create an event your family and friends will long remember. The following ideas will help your creative juices begin flowing.
- Choose colors and decor that express your personality. Do you like orange and fuschia together? Go for it. Like a rustic outdoorsy feel? Wonderful. Like Scottish plaids? Use them everywhere.
- Don't add a theme that doesn't seem natural. Adding an ethnic touch or a garden theme to your event can look and feel natural where more contrived themes may seem out of place or downright silly, unless it is your intention to be whimsical and you can pull it off tastefully.
- Don't be afraid to do something unexpected. We have had clients who hired mariachi bands and Italian accordian players to stroll through dinner parties, bagpipers to lead a wedding processional, a bride and groom who stomped grapes during their ceremony (remember the I Love Lucy grape stomping episode?) and more. If it is tasteful and you think your guests will enjoy it, go for it.
- Prioritize for greater impact. Most events are created on a budget. If you must choose between adding one spectacular item or several smaller ones, go for the larger item. A dramatic backdrop behind a podium or head table will add more impact than several small items on a tabletop.
- Use the walls or ceiling. Assuming your venue will allow it, hanging decor from the ceiling (think snowflakes or Chinese lanterns) will enhance the feel. Use colored spot lights to wash the walls with color. If your venue allows items to be placed on the walls, consider placing posters or large photos in strategic areas.
- Use non-traditional materials. Right now burlap is popular for table runners. How about using denim or lace instead. Or use bandanas in place of linen napkins for an outdoor event. Check with your rental center to find out what types of linens they can order. You might be surprised at the wide variety available. Add bling by using inexpensive costume jewelry picked up at garage sales for napkin rings or in centerpieces. Use pots of herbs for centerpieces then plant them in your garden.
